I initially had the same problem as most of you, pc going into black screen after 'windows starting' screen and hanging at the classpnp.sys when trying to boot in safe mode. I was trying to help someone fix a non-booting Win8 laptop and none of the key combos worked to get into safe mode.

Sure enough...I discovered two bad memory modules. If you think this may help, let me know and I can upload them.My hard disc is a Patriot Torqz 2 64GB SSD and my motherboard is a Gigabyte M68MT-S2. I tried doing the c:\windows\system32\drivers\classpnp.sys to classpnp.old but then it just stops at the one before and goes on to say windows is starting in safe mode but then it shuts The thing is, the ram that is working is Crucial.

Some people suggest changing my SATA mode option until it can recognize the SSD, but my BIOS (Phoenix - Award BIOS) doesn't have a clear defined "SATA Mode" option. I don't get this. Instead, it brings up the same Windows select mode as a result of it not shutting down properly (giving the option for safe mode or normal mode). Or both. Ran the hard drive test from the bios.

I disconnected my hd and ran the boot disc and was able to launch beyond the point where the system was getting hung up.It sucks that this will cost me, but It's worth to give a try.
