For some reason, Windows Update fails to find more recent versions of network adapter drivers in MANY cases. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread. Something was obviously getting in the way. Rusty Tried all steps listed above on my Win7 laptop - did not fix.
One note: after deleting the "Config" a reboot is required. After I did your little trick and restarted Config was back but still no items under Network Connections. ShrtBus Rebooting the computer into safe mode with networking fixes this issue as well. I didn't see any "Config".
