Amazingly, it is a variety of free tools including Microsoft's Malicious Software scanner that usually finds the culprit. While Security Essentials isn't a catch-all piece of software, it is a great last line of defence on a fully updated PC. I used regedit to remove Norton totally and it took above 1 hour. The phishing protection is irrelevant since all major web browsers now have that built in, and last time I checked, IE11's was the best. If you download and run harmful programs, you're going to end up in trouble at some point. you can check on that, I can't.In any case, MSE is free, and MSE is, in fact, very good; there is pretty much universal agreement on that point. I called their customer service and they told me the constant warnings were to protect me. Kaspersky has been around for a long time and they have a great track record.
